If you have tried our beef snacks then you know about the benefits that we promote; high in protein, zero trans-fat, no preservatives, gluten free, and of course zero sugar. These qualities make our products perfect for a variety of diets that you may have heard of such as Keto, Paleo, and Whole 30. It has been brought to our attention that one of our popular products, Droewors, is also perfect for a person avoiding foods that contain nightshades. What are nightshades? No, we are not talking about the toxic herb used by Sally in A Nightmare before Christmas but there are definitely some similarities. (see reference)
What are Nightshades?
Nightshades are a family of flowering plants (formal name Solanaceae) that are commonly used as spices in everyday recipes. The plants range from things like goji berries, eggplants, potatoes and tomatoes, to red pepper flakes, cayenne and chili powder. There are actually over 2,500 species within the family and even include things like tobacco. (Wikipedia).
So what makes nightshades bad? Nightshades contain potent alkaloids called glycoalkaloids that are said to cause irritation and inflammation in the body, especially to those who have autoimmune disease or digestive sensitivities to one or more of the nightshades. It has also been said that some athletes, like Tom Brady, avoid nightshades because "they are not anti-inflammatory" (see article).
Not everyone is affected by nightshades and there are actually an abundance of nutrients in fruits and vegetables that might also contain nightshades. We are by no means insisting that you avoid nightshades, but if you choose to, you’ve probably had a very difficult time finding a high protein beef snack that doesn’t contain ingredients like paprika or chili powder. Meet Droewors. Our handcrafted, air-dried sausages (think “a premium beef stick”) has 16g of protein per ounce, contains nothing artificial, no sugar, and NO NIGHTSHADES! 😎 In fact, Ayoba-Yo Droewors contains just: Premium Beef, Vinegar and Four spices!
