Product Questions

Glad you asked! Ayoba is a South African term used to express amazement & approval.  We created Ayoba to celebrate our roots and introduce America to our traditional South African style meats known as Biltong, Droëwors & Boerewors. Give them a try and soon you'll be saying that’s Ayoba!

Pronounced bil-toNG

Biltong is a traditional South African recipe beef snack that is crafted with premium cuts of grass fed beef. Ayoba Biltong has zero sugar, is high in protein with delicious natural beef flavor, and a texture combination that falls somewhere between jerky and prosciutto. The process is simple, yet delicate. We start with the finest cuts of beef and spice it to perfection using an old family recipe, we then marinate the slab of beef and air dry it for over fourteen days. We then carefully slice the slab into thin, tender bite-size pieces. Just like our South African ancestors, we use no artificial ingredients and only clean, natural spices. It’s perfect for a quick bite, meal replacement, or a post-workout snack. Ayoba Biltong also has 30% more protein than jerky!

Droëwors is an artisanal dried beef stick that is made with 100% beef and contains no sugar. As with our Biltong, we start with premium cuts of beef that are finely ground and spiced with only coriander, cloves, salt and pepper. The mix is then carefully hand-stuffed into a natural casing and hung to dry for over five days. The result is a delicious, high protein treat that makes the perfect road trip or adventure snack that can be eaten anywhere!

You probably mean Droewors. Some brands out there thought it would be easier to call it Biltong Sticks because not everyone knows what Droewors is. We stay true to our South African heritage by calling it Droewors (which translates to "dry sausage").

The most important difference between Biltong and jerky lies in the drying process. Making Biltong is a two week-long process where the beef is air-dried without any heat, compared to jerky which uses a dehydrator or oven at a low temperature. Biltong also has a variety of all-natural ingredients which enhance the flavor and helps cure the meat. Another unique difference between Biltong and jerky is the taste. Biltong isn’t smoked like traditional jerky or covered in a marinade of bbq or teriyaki, but rather has a natural beef flavor. The last difference between Biltong and jerky is the thickness of meat used when curing the meat. Biltong is dried in large slabs rather than thin slices like jerky. Read Our Blog

Our premium beef snacks contain zero sugar.  🙌 In fact they do not contain any artificial flavors or preservatives, nitrates or MSG or fillers.  In addition, they are gluten free and soy free.

Yes, our premium beef snacks contain 30% more protein than beef jerky.  One 2 oz bag of our Biltong contains 31 grams of protein.

Pronounced boo-reh-Vors

Boerewors is a traditional South African recipe sausage that is made of beef and pork (also available in Beef Only). The word translates from Afrikaans into English as "Farmers' Sausage". Just like our ancestors, we use no artificial flavorings or preservatives and no fillers. Boerewors' secret ingredient is coriander, which sets it apart from any other sausage and gives it the authentic South African taste.

Grass Fed Beef means the cattle have only been fed grass and other foraged foods like alfalfa. Grain Fed Beef means the cattle might have been grass-fed at some point in it’s life, but it has also had a diet consisting of grains such as corn. Think of it this way, Grass Fed cattle live a life of essentially only eating salads made of grass, whereas Grain Fed cattle will also have sweeter food like corn and oats. Grass Fed cattle also tend to have more access to pastures to graze (this is certainly true of our Grass-Fed cows) which also contributes to the leaner beef. Read Our Blog

The main difference between the two types of beef comes from the diet of the cattle. For this reason, Grass Fed cows tend to have leaner muscles and not as much fat marbled in the meat. Grass Fed cattle also tend to have more access to pastures to graze (this is certainly true of our Grass-Fed cows) which also contributes to the leaner beef. For this reason, Biltong made with Grass Fed beef tends to be a little leaner and thus a little drier than its Grain Fed counterpart. Grain Fed Beef tends to have more fat marbling and thus will stay more moist during the Biltong drying process. When it comes to the taste and flavor of Droewors, we believe that they both taste very similar and nearly indistinguishable. Read Our Blog

We care about our community. The DC Metro area is one of the most diverse melting pots in the USA and has directly contributed to our growth. As a thank you we donate a portion of our profits to Martha's Table who in turn provides healthy food, affordable clothing, and quality education to the less fortunate in our area. That's Ayoba! Every purchase on our website and in-store indirectly helps a child and/or parent in need. If you feel so moved, please take it upon yourself to visit their website, donate directly to them, or volunteer in one of their soup kitchens or food truck.
