If you are currently reading our Braai Blog, you are probably wondering what in the world is a Braai?  Well my friend, we are here to help answer that question for you, as well as life's other mysteries (ok well maybe not the latter). 

The Braai Basics: 

The word Braai, pronounced Bry, is Afrikaans for “barbecue” or “roast” and is a social custom in South Africa. It can be used to describe an event: 

 "Let's have a Braai"

A social gathering where friends and family 'meat' at someone's home (or a communal venue) and is typically centered around a grill. Which brings us to our next use:

"Throw more Boerewors on the Braai!"  

Typically the grill, or braai, would use either real wood or charcoal (some purists, including some of the Ayoba crew, insist that this is mandatory), but a gas grill is perfectly fine if that is all that is available. 

The Authentic Braai

• As we just mentioned, using charcoal or real wood is heavily encouraged.
• Meat is always the centerpiece of a real braai. Braai meat typically include Boerewors, kebabs, marinated chicken, pork chops, lamb chops, steaks, spareribs, we could go on for days! 
• The whole experience is meant to be social and communal. Friends and family get to "meat" and catch up while the Braai gets to that perfect cooking temperature (we thought about using "ketchup" instead of "catch up" in that sentence, but thought these food puns might be getting a little cheesy) .
• Typically a Braai also includes some adult beverages, mainly beer and wine, but we also love these mocktail recipes from Spindrift.
• Braais are also great for tailgating before a football game, before concerts, after rugby matches, etc.  But in the end, there's always an excuse to have a Braai! Just don't forget the Boerewors.
