If you are currently reading our Braai Blog, you are probably wondering what in the world is a Braai! Well my friend, we are here to help answer that question for you, as well as life's other mysteries (ok well maybe not the latter).
The word braai (pronounced “bry”, plural braais) is Afrikaans for “barbecue” or “roast” and is a social custom in South Africa.
More specifically, a Braai is a social event where family and friends get together at someone’s home (or communal meeting spot) with their own meat (hopefully Ayoba-Yo Boerewors), salad, or an appetizer. Meat is always the centerpiece of a South African braai. Braai meat typically include Boerewors, kebabs, marinated chicken, pork and lamb chops, steaks, and possibly even a rack or two of spareribs.
Food is the main focus at a braai, however the whole experience is also very social and communal. Friends and family get to "meat" up (get it) and hangout while the grill gets to that perfect cooking temperature. And then there's the drinking and socializing before the meat is ready to eat. This is the whole point of a braai - a social gathering that can last for hours on end. Also, the right grill is essential to a braai - coals over gas is a must for a proper braai.
You see, a braai is all about having a good time and catching up with friends and/or family. Braais are also great at events such as rugby, cricket or soccer matches. But in the end, there's always an excuse to have a braai!
